From the user's psychological perspective

Human beings are social creatures by nature. We, the flesh-and-blood individuals, desire and need to be accepted in a group, which is an essential part of our behavior. And for others to accept us in a group, we need to adhere to similar behavioral patterns. The concept of Social Validation indicates that when a product is recommended by friends or relatives, consumers tend to trust that choice without needing to investigate further. This highlights the importance of reviews and comments in building trust from customers. It can be said that this is a powerful marketing tool for your product to gain customers' trust.


The impact of Reviews on E-commerce

When users complete an order, we will send an email with order information along with a suggestion to review the quality of the product and service. Why should we do that?

Because it is not just a marketing strategy but also a valuable data collection tool for businesses. You can find out whether customers are satisfied with your product, and what makes them feel satisfied. And if they are not satisfied, that provides you with an opportunity to rectify issues to improve service, which is crucial for retaining loyal customers. Moreover, satisfied customers are not only likely to return but also tend to recommend the product to friends, creating a positive loop for the brand.

So what is the best way to improve the review and rating system? How can a brand use its power to retain current customers and persuade potential customers? Let's explore the following article!

1. Send reviews and ratings via Email after a successful purchase

Instead of waiting for users to search for their order or purchased product, send a review request via email and direct users to your store to leave feedback. It's essential to keep your review request email stand out from the crowd. In today's fast-changing world, our attention span is affected by many other marketing channels. Here are some considerations we apply to improve the email review requests.

  • Consistent email interface with the brand: Brand consistency is crucial for the success of all marketing activities as it helps you build brand awareness and establish trust between customers and the brand.

  • Keep the layout simple: A simple design does not mean a sloppy design — it means how you optimize your design as needed, especially when you design content in a limited space like an email. Try not to overwhelm customers with too many components in your email.

  • Keep the message concise, engaging, and personalized: A concise and engaging message greatly contributes to the success of your marketing campaign. Start your email with a friendly greeting and get straight to the point of why your customers are receiving this email.

2. Encourage customers to review products

You assess and utilize current customer reviews to create a positive impact for new customers in the future.

Provide your customers with some additional motivation to leave a review. But wait, there's something to clarify here: do not bribe customers for a good review. That's not good; it's unethical and can create a mess contrary to the original intent. Instead, simply create an incentive for them to leave a review.

Again, to encourage customers to leave a “Review”; not a “Good Review”. You hope customers leave good reviews, but you should not manipulate customers when encouraging them.

In fact, you should also consider the possibility that your product might receive negative reviews. A 1–5 star rating system (commonly used in E-commerce) will help users easily leave their opinions on a specific item. Providing incentives will help improve the product review experience; if customers feel satisfied, they will likely leave more positive reviews.

3. Provide a summary review interface for products

Users rely on summary information to get an overall picture of the reviewed product. After checking, they can choose a few reviews to read in-depth.

Failing to provide a user interface that displays rating distribution can mislead users in two different ways:

  1. If users only see an overwhelming number of positive reviews on the first page of reviews, they sometimes speculate that those reviews are fake.

  2. If users see most negative reviews displayed first, they assume the product is rated poorly, when in fact it is the opposite.

In both cases, the end result is that users misunderstand product reviews, leading them to discard products they consider “opaque” and turn to more reliable products and services. Having a review summary at the top of the review section can help users understand the product at a glance. This may include:

  • Focusing on service, quality, product information, … or any other features related to the product.

  • Most common or helpful comments and negative reviews. When accessing the review section, many will search for the most negative reviews to learn about the shortcomings of the product. By providing this information upfront, you save users time.

  • A 1–5 star rating system.

Allow users to filter and sort reviews. Ensure that these filters are discoverable and recognizable on the page. Search filters, such as “Newest”, “Most Favorite” or “Purchased” ensure that users can easily find relevant reviews.
